Week of Sept 30-Oct 4th

It is all about water quality and pollution this week!! Once we talk about the quality of our water we will be learning the different steps that our water goes through in order for us to use it.

--Water Treatment Diagram

Lab: Water's Properties

LAB DAY!!!!!

Students were trying to see how many drops of water would sit on a penny before spilling over.

What property of water allowed this to happen? Ask an AMS 8th grader to find out!!!

Monday, September 9, 2019

Week of September 9-13

We are talking about water and its' properties this week.
--Surface tension, capillary action, universal solvent, and specific heat

**Lab this week: We will be seeing how many water droplets will sit on a penny. What property allows the bubble of water to form???????

Voc #3 Test this Friday!!!! Try making flashcards or create some on Quizlet.

Tuesday, August 20, 2019

Welcome back to AMS!!!!

Welcome back 8th graders!!!!

--My Mad Science Blog contains what will be going on for each week in science along with a quick link to the "Weekly Update".

--Make sure you check it out each week.

Week of: April 15th-19th

Viruses... Should they be considered a living organism?

This has been the topic of our week. We have compiled evidence from reading and by using Khan
Academy. Students have learned the 7 characteristics that are required to be considered a living organism.

Tuesday:
Groups used their evidence and chose sides to debate:
"Should viruses be considered living organisms?"

Thursday:
Chapter 11 Test: viruses, bacteria, protist, and fungi

Friday, April 5, 2019

Week of April 8th- April 12th

This week in science:

--Pathogens: viruses, bacteria, fungi, and parasites.....

We will be comparing and contrasting viruses and bacteria. Students will be gathering facts to choose a side and debate: Are Viruses Alive?

We will also be learning about Biotechnology.... what is it?, why is it important?, and the ties to NC Research.

Thursday, March 28, 2019

Week of April 1st - April 5th

Microbiology starts this week!!!! (My favorite)

--"What's the difference between a virus and bacteria?"
--You will be gathering details regarding viruses and bacteria, such as how they work, are they good or bad, can they be KILLED.

**Bacteria Music Review

**Many of this week's assignments will be gathering information that will be used in a classroom debate. You will be choosing sides for this debate based on your evidence.

Thursday, March 21, 2019

Week of March 25th-March 29th

Quarter 3 ends on Thursday!!! Make sure you do not have any outstanding assignments.

**Eighth grade high school registration forms are due to Mrs. Brown no later than this Wednesday. Mrs. Brundin from AHS will be meeting with individual students the week of April 1st!!!

This week in science:

--Science Talk: we will be debating our two articles regarding DNA and saving endangered species.

--Lab: Radioactive Decay of "Candium"
We will be learning about half life of elements by using M&Ms or Skittles!!
You will be able to eat the decayed atoms!

--Q3 Portfolios:
We will complete these in class this nine weeks.

FRIDAY: We will be starting our unit on Microbiology. This is the last unit before EOG review.

Geologic Time T-Shirts

These ladies created a t-shirt for extra credit to represent their t-shirt souvenir from the Cenozoic Era.
L-R: MG Krol, Emma Donnally, Emma Brown, Graylin Olivieri

Week of March 18th-22nd

It is Geologic Time this week!!! We will be Speed Dating with our Geologic Time Projects!!--These are due Wednesday. Remember there are NO EXCEPTIONS!!

Lab Activity:We will be comparing homologous and analogous structures during a lab this week.

Candy....... don't forget to bring in your pack of plain M&Ms or Skittles this week for the radioactive decay lab next week.

Monday, March 11, 2019

Week of March 11th-March 15th

Geologic Time Week!!!
--We will be discussing the ERAs in geologic time in detail this week.

--Tuesday we well be creating a Geologic Time Football Field. This will involve math conversions:
1 yard=50 million years

Keep working on those Geologic Time Projects. These will be due next Wednesday, March 20th!!!!

Wednesday, February 27, 2019

Week of March 4th-March 8th

Busy Week in Science:

LABS!!!!
We will be performing two labs this week. Everybody loves science labs and both of these are edible. One lab will address the LAW of SUPERPOSITION and the second lab will focus on fossil extraction.

Notes:
Notes this week will focus on our initial discussion of the 3 ERAS of geologic time. Speaking of  GEOLOGIC TIME......

Q3 Projects will be assigned this week. Some classes will be creating travel brochures while others will be creating a Geologic Time Machine and collecting souvenirs.
All projects will be due Wednesday, March 20th!!!

**Pictures will be posted on the blog later!

Monday, February 25, 2019

February 25th -March 1st

This week in science:

Relative Age vs Absolute Age
**How can we determine how old fossils and rocks are using relative age and absolute age?
**How can tectonic plates change this age?

Key terms:
--Law of Superposition
--Relative age
--Absolute age
--Unconformity

**Make sure you can explain these terms and be able to draw the law of superposition!!

Tuesday, February 19, 2019

February 18th-February 22nd

Fossils and Geologic Time:

--Where do we find fossils?
--What exactly is a Fossil?
--Explain the difference between fossilization and preservation. Is there really a difference?

After this week, you should be able to discuss these questions with your groups.

**Mystery Print Activity:
--What did you have??????

Thursday, January 17, 2019

Week of January 21st-25th

What's going on this week in science:

--Monday: Holiday: Martin Luther King Day

--Tuesday: Teacher Workday

--Wednesday-Friday:
We will begin discussing the Periodic Table. Students will be learning the properties used to explain why the elements are arranged as they are on the table.

Pretest on Thursday to see what you know about physical and chemical changes.

Chemistry Voc Review Test on Friday!!!

Monday, January 7, 2019

Week of January 7th-11th

This week in Science:

--We are studying the concepts mass, volume, and density. Students are learning how to solve for each in the equation:
                         D=M/V

--Chemical and Physical Change Posters will be assigned on Tuesday. The directions can be found on the Weekly Update!!!

**Voc #12 Test is Friday. Five review words from previous vocabulary will be added each week to the test starting this Friday. Remember... you are to learn the science vocabulary, not memorize it:)
